To Paint or Not to Paint Before Selling is the Question
As we all know, first impressions are everything when selling your home. It takes approximately 15 seconds for a buyer to determine if they want to buy your house. Most buyers are able to tell pretty quickly upon looking in a home whether the property would or would not work for them. If you want to sell your house in a short amount of time and with minimum hassle, it's critical that the decor is up-to-date and attractive.
Paint is relatively simple to apply or change, but the wrong color inside or out can turn a buyer off from the entire house. To prevent this, many ASP Home Stagers and Realtors recommend painting your home in neutral colors. Both interior and exterior paint jobs can lead to great Returns On Investment. A newly painted home will be worth more and may attract a multitude of buyers.
I recommend choosing light, neutral colors for both the interior and the exterior of the home. Light colors can open up even a small space, making it appear brighter and larger. Neutral colors can also allow the buyer to visualize themselves living in your home. This de-personalizes the property and create a fresh slate. Avoid painting entire rooms in bold colors, those colors would be for your taste palette and not necessarily the buyers. Besides, they go out of fashion or tend to stand out for the wrong reasons.
If you're still living in the home you're selling, keep in mind the colors on the walls are your taste and not the buyers. Neutral colors are not limited anymore. You can use browns, greens or greige colors to provide a warm neutral feel to your home.
And don't forget about the exterior of your home, a bright peach or aqua colors that works in Florida will not work for someone in Maine. Chances are these colors would turn off a potential buyer.
